Leather

Soft, but Durable Leathers...

Our leathers are picked very intentionally. We stay away from leathers that are too soft and stretchy, but also stay away from anything too hard that would be uncomfortable. Our goal is something right in between that has body yet is supple and will conform to your shape over time.

Both harness leather and tooling leather may have minor surface imperfections that are natural and add character to the appearance. The color of your strap will typically darken some and will patina over time. This is the natural result of the aging process with high-quality leather. The result will be a wonderful vintage look.

All leathers used at HuntNPik are veg tanned meaning no chemicals are used in the tanning process.  Veg tannning uses natural vegetable tannins to modify the protein structure of the hide to produce leather.

By default, we use 8/9 oz Herman Oak Harness Leather for all straps.  This leather is available in Brown or Russet.  If any sort of leather tooling is requested such as basketstamping or monogramming, we will instead use 8/9 oz Oak Tan Tooling Leather.  Our tooling leather is available in Russet (see color chart below).

Harness Leather

Harness leather is veg tanned leather using natural vegetable tannins derived from bark and plants in the tanning process.  Veg tanning also includes a process of hot stuffing with wax to produce a non-stretching, weather resistant leather for use in outdoor horse harness gear, lines, reins, belts, …and also banjo and guitar straps!

Tooling Leather

Tooling leather is also a veg tanned leather except with no added oils or wax. It is used when designs are tooled into the leather such as basket-stamping or flower carving and then is hand-oiled. This type of leather is often used to make belts. It will be used by default if you choose to have your strap basket-stamped or monogrammed.
